Collaborations

Research doesn’t happen in one lab.

The Leong Team’s work depends on institutional infrastructure at MGH and Broad, and on international genetics consortia that make ancestrally diverse, adequately powered studies possible.

Institutional Partners

The infrastructure behind our studies.

Diabetes Research Center

The clinical home base for this team’s human studies — nurses, coordinators, and clinic space for the visits that TARGET, CGM-A1c Genetics, COVID, and PROGRESS all depend on.

Center for Genomic Medicine

MGH’s home for genomic research, including the Florez Lab, where several current and former team members and collaborators are based.

Mass General Brigham Biobank

The genotyped biobank this team recalls participants from for recall-by-genotype studies like TARGET and CGM-A1c Genetics — identifying people at the extremes of genetic risk directly from real-world clinical data.

Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed)

An NIH program integrating whole-genome sequencing with other omics data across diverse cohorts; Dr. Leong holds a collaborative role within TOPMed’s broader genetics efforts.

Research Consortia & Partners

Where the genetic discovery work happens at scale.

MAGIC

Meta-Analyses of Glucose and Insulin-related traits Consortium

An international consortium pooling GWAS data on glycemic traits — the source of much of the HbA1c and glycemic-trait genetics this team’s work builds on.

EDIC

Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications

The long-term follow-up of the landmark DCCT trial. Dr. Leong is Principal Investigator of the MGH site, studying the long-term outcomes of type 1 diabetes.

Broad Institute

Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard

Home to several current and former team members and close collaborators, including Dr. Josep Mercader’s group, who co-author much of this team’s genetics work.

MVP

Million Veteran Program

A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs genomics cohort of over a million veterans, providing scale and diversity for genetic association studies of diabetes-related traits.

CHARGE

Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology

A consortium of longitudinal cohort studies used for large-scale genetic discovery in cardiometabolic and aging-related traits.

DIAGRAM

DIAbetes Genetics Replication And Meta-analysis

An international consortium focused on discovering and replicating genetic variants associated with type 2 diabetes across ancestries.

NUS

National University of Singapore

An international academic partner extending this team’s genetics and precision-medicine research to additional ancestrally diverse populations.
